In Kenya, High School is not free. The Maasai are one of the most impoverished tribes in East Africa. Due to cost, distance, and other factors, only 10% of Maasai girls continue on to Secondary School. KCEA provides scholarships giving Maasai girls a chance to stay in school. KCEA scholarships not only cover the school fees and supplies required for attendance but also the cost of transportation, medical expenses, and provide regular Life Skills Conferences for the sponsored students and members of their community.

KCEA's primary focus is on enabling Maasai young women to attend secondary school. Less than 1 in 10 Maasai girls in Kenya will complete secondary school. Nine out of ten will be circumcised and married off before the age of 15. Secondary education is available only in boarding schools and many Maasai families cannot afford to send their daughters to boarding school. So KCEA identifies capable Maasai girls who are highly motivated to learn. Such girls are admitted into the KCEA program which includes financial support to attend secondary school and mentoring in life skills they may not otherwise learn.

In effect, they become part of an "extended family" of which John and Peris Keshe are the loving and principled leaders. They "parent" and counsel the students in many ways. One very concrete illustration of support provided by the Keshe's is that every school vacation some of the students stay with the Keshe's when the students are unable to go to their own home (due to a wide variety of challenges).

Three times a year (during school vacations) they attend LifeSkills workshops. These two days conferences provide seminars by outside experts and local leaders on diverse topics ranging from leadership, to moral values to health. Our current 78 secondary students who attend more than 20 different secondary schools get to socialize and play sports with each other, strengthening their bonds and sense of community

It is a joy to assist these young women as they learn and develop into responsible educated adults. Not only do they learn academic skills and discipline. They also learn interpersonal skills, moral values, healthy self-confidence and commitment to the common good.
